Social Development Treatment Options

Social skills training can be highly effective in helping both adults and children develop essential tools for handling social situations and forming and maintaining relationships. There are different ways of achieving these results, and we can try a variety of modalities to determine which work best for the individual.

  • At its core, ABA therapy is used to improve or maintain the skills and actions necessary for everyday life. These include communication skills, social interactions, and learning techniques.

ABA therapy is also used to help improve social skills like appropriate interactions with peers, taking turns, following rules, and understanding and following social cues.

  • FCT is the process of teaching meaningful and functional communication in a natural way. The goal of functional communication is to address inappropriate and non-functional behaviors with those that are functional and socially acceptable. By doing this, needs can be met more efficiently, and clients are better able to connect with those around them.

  • Mindfulness specifically refers to the practice of paying attention to the present moment non-judgmentally. Observation of our thoughts and feelings allows us to better understand our emotions and react rationally to negative situations.

  • At Blue Bird Social Skills, we use a VR platform that provides immersive lessons individualized for each client and guided by your coach. Using VR to guide social learning is a very novel and unique experience, and we cannot wait to share it with you.

  • Video modeling is used to teach new skills in a low stress environment. Videos address specifically-targeted skills depending on the needs of each client. Skills can then be practiced in progressively more realistic environments.

  • CBT is a form of therapy that teaches us to challenge and revaluate unhelpful thought patterns and learn new problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations.

  • Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relationship Skills (PEERS) is a social skills training intervention program for adolescents and young adults.
